“This is a lot,” David said.

“This is a lot?” I tucked myself into an alcove down the hallway of Sunnybrook’s D-wing and steadied my back against the wall.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Fly to Toronto.”

“It’s too much.”

“I’ll pay for the flight. I don’t care about money.”

“No. It’s too much.”

“What’s too much?”

“This.”

“This is too much for you?”

David paused. I could hear him centering himself on the other end. “I’m driving up to San Francisco to see the Mountain this weekend.”

We called this new man the Mountain because David’s enthusiasm seemed insurmountable and, for me, the climb was not worth the energy. The Mountain was closeted. As an advanced homosexual, you don’t need to fuck a ripe peach to know how that relationship ends. I mentally gave it six weeks before it was over.

“David. I’m hanging up the phone, but not because you’re seeing someone new — I couldn’t give a fuck. I’m hanging up because you’re an asshole.”

“Shawn, don’t speak to me like this.”

I unleashed my attack dog.

“No, David. You wanted a fucking Matt deal. You aren’t worthy of a Matt deal. You certainly aren’t willing to earn it. Don’t call me, don’t text, don’t write. Go back to Instagramming your fucking matching Birkenstock sandals on the beach. I’m done with this roller-coaster. I have to go take my ex-husband off life support. I have greater concerns than your romantic patterns.”

“Shawn, don’t hang —”
